I grew up in East Sussex, England. Charleston House represents to me all the Englishness that I admire: freedom of thought, eccentricity and irreverence. The story goes like this: Virginia Woolf recommends to her sister the painter, Vanessa Bell, her lover Duncan Grant, his lover David Garnett, their children and dog to move to this ordinary farmhouse in 1916. From the moment the trio of lovers and their family moved in, the artists began decorating and turning the place into a place of domestic and sensuous beauty. Over time, the famous Bloomsbury Group was born there, including the most pioneering artists, writers and thinkers of the twentieth century. I love their anti-establishment approach and the fact that they believe arts and freedom of thought is the foundation to living.
